Anatomy of a Saudi–Indonesia remittance
Moving money from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia is cheaper than the global average. It is still not free, and the sender rarely sees where the difference goes. This note follows one transfer, line by line.

One transfer, followed
Take a worker in Saudi Arabia sending SAR 500 to family in Indonesia on a bank-style rail. At the mid-market rate on the date below, the family should receive the “ideal” amount. They receive less. The gap is the cost of the transfer. 1 SAR ≈ Rp 4,826 · 7 Nov 2026
The sender picks an app
Banks, wallets and money-transfer apps all serve this corridor. They differ less in the interface than in the rail underneath, which the app rarely announces.
The app takes a fee up front
This is the visible line. It pays for agents or distribution, compliance checks (KYC and AML), infrastructure and margin. In this model it is 2% of the amount.
The rail sets the FX spread
The spread is the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate the sender gets. It is rarely shown as a fee, and it is where rails differ most.
BI-FAST clears the last leg in Indonesia
Bank Indonesia’s real-time system caps what banks may charge customers at Rp 2,500 per transfer. Whether that fee reaches the recipient depends on the app. The model counts it as a cost.
The family receives the balance
The money lands in a bank account or e-wallet. What is left is what the family can actually spend.
Five rails, one corridor
Cross-border payments are not one network. Several rails run in parallel, each with its own cost and speed. Two apps that look the same can sit on very different rails. Ranges below are indicative editorial estimates built from providers’ public pricing, not measured data. Check the provider before you send.
| Rail | Typical users | Speed | FX spread |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWIFT + correspondent banks | Traditional banks | 1–3 days | 1.5–2.5% |
| Card network push | Visa Direct, Mastercard Send style | Minutes | 0.8–1.5% |
| Pre-funded local balances | Wise-style treasury | Minutes to hours | 0.5–1% |
| Ledger-based (XRP) | Bank partners on a shared ledger | Seconds | 0.3–0.8% |
| Stablecoin | Exchanges and P2P, needs a licensed on-ramp | Minutes | 0.1–0.8% |
How the layers stacked up
New rails arrive every decade without removing the old ones. That layering is why cross-border payments feel complicated today.
- 1973SWIFT is foundedA shared messaging standard for banks. It still underpins most international bank transfers.
- 2011Pre-funded balances arriveWise (then TransferWise) launches and swaps balances held locally instead of moving money across borders.
- 2012Ledger-based settlementThe XRP Ledger is created for fast cross-border settlement between institutions.
- 2014Dollar stablecoinsTether introduces a token pegged to the US dollar, later widely used as a bridge for peer-to-peer transfers.
- 2021Sarie goes live in Saudi ArabiaSAMA launches the instant payment system “sarie” on 20 February 2021.
- 2021BI-FAST goes live in IndonesiaBank Indonesia launches real-time transfers on 21 December 2021, with a Rp 2,500 customer fee ceiling.

What this means
For senders
Compare against the mid-market rate
Before you send, check the mid-market SAR–IDR rate. If the app’s rate is far from it, the difference is a hidden fee, however low the headline fee looks.
For product teams
Show fee and FX separately
An itemised breakdown builds trust faster than an “all-in rate”. Users who can see the spread can compare, and teams that show it first set the terms of the comparison.
For builders
Two instant systems, no bridge
Saudi Arabia has Sarie and Indonesia has BI-FAST, both real-time. A product that connects them cleanly could cut settlement from hours to seconds. That is a product and licensing problem before it is an engineering one.
